“They’ve called in hospice.” It’s a phrase so many people have heard or said. Many people say this or hear this, thinking that calling hospice means someone is in their last days or actively dying, that family needs to hurry to say their goodbyes. But “calling in hospice” actually means comfort, support, and quality time for up to six months. They also may think it means that a team moves into your home and is underfoot. While we do call our team’s involvement the “hospice hug” because of the level of support you receive, we don’t move in. Rather, we help equip the caregiver to provide daily care and schedule regular visits while providing expert support. Our goal is to provide care that doesn’t inconvenience you but supports you when you need it.
Calling hospice doesn’t have to mean someone is in their last days or hours. Hospice is a six-month benefit that provides comfort care when someone is no longer seeking curative treatment. In the last six months of serious illness, symptoms can become more severe. This often means trips to the ER and more intensive care responsibilities for caregivers. Calling in hospice early means we come to you, wherever you call home, and we provide symptom and pain relief so that you can avoid going to the hospital. Your Hospice Team helps keep your loved one comfortable at home so that you can focus on the quality time you have left together.
In addition to caring for your loved one’s physical needs, hospice provides emotional support for your loved one and the family. Our support service teams include chaplains, healthcare social workers, music therapists, and grief counselors who are equipped to help you and your family navigate difficult and overwhelming emotions. We can facilitate difficult conversations and support spiritual questions, regardless of religion or worldview. The earlier you call, the longer you and your family have to say your goodbyes, as well.
Hospice care is about making the unbearable moments bearable. The sooner you request support, the more time you have to spend with your loved one. Let us help you manage symptoms, navigate the healthcare system, and provide support for your needs as the caregiver and family by calling in hospice sooner.
Calling hospice does not mean you are giving up on your loved one. It means choosing comfort and compassion through expertise and support.
You are never alone with Four Seasons.
