My Hospice Team is My Second Family: Susan Petersen’s Story

Susan Petersen, hospice team member.

Susan is a hospice patient with Four Seasons and shares her experience receiving our care.

“My first experience with hospice was as a massage therapist volunteer at a hospice house in Portland, Oregon over 40 years ago. And now, I am a patient. I know that I will always have help with my emotional, physical, and spiritual needs. The care and compassion I experience from the Hospice Team gives me such comfort to know help is on the way.

No one should have to be alone with end-of-life issues. Hospice is there to help. Many people have a misconception about hospice. They think that it is a death sentence, that hospice is an invitation to die. I try to let them know that it is an organization that takes pride in caring for people in their last days; not to push [death] forward, but to give people what they need [during that natural time of life].

My relationship with each one of [my care team] is very rewarding, and I am filled with gratitude. I have come to think of my hospice team as my second family. I can discuss and ask anything and I receive a response, which I appreciate so much since my son and my grandchildren live so very far away. It is a comfort to them to know that I am being well cared for, accepted, and loved.”

Calling hospice does not mean you are giving up on your loved one. It means choosing comfort and compassion through expertise and support. Four Seasons provides whole-person care, meaning that we support the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of the patient, as well as the emotional and spiritual needs of their family. You are never alone with Four Seasons.
