Originally Written, Produced, and Performed Song about Grief
We invite you to listen to this beautiful song (right), written and performed by Four Seasons Music Therapy Clinical Specialist, Taylor Gass, MS, NMT, MT BC. The song explores grief and how we always remember our loved ones, even when they are gone.
The seasons change without a thought for sorrow
The earth keeps spinning careless, bright, and blue
They talk of healing gently
But grief has left me empty
To see this world without the light I knew
I speak her name and feel the silence gather
Like winter frost that settles on the breeze
They tell me it will take time…
Can I expect the sunshine?
How can I wait when I can barely breathe?
A road named for a creek that washed it out
A street named for a tree that’s been cut down
A holler named for some old church that’s barely standing now
A heart claimed by the past that beats somehow
You say the clouds all have a silver lining
But here I have not found that to be true
The mist hangs low and heavy
My heart, she isn’t ready
Don’t ask me now to feel the way you do.
The summer drags her feet through late September
Then rests her gleaming brow on fields of gold
The leaves all die in color
Does one feel better than the other?
Or do they all feel best when they let go?
A road named for a creek that washed it out
A street named for a tree that’s been cut down
A holler named for some old church that’s barely standing now
A heart claimed by the past that beats somehow
A heart claimed by the past that beats somehow
The rain, it falls forever in the springtime
The peaks are buried deep in fog and steam
The hills they need this season
To soften and to deepen
We can’t see it
But we know it
In time, the seasons show it:
Beneath her shroud the mountain’s ever slowly turning green.
How Music Therapy Supports Patients and Families
Music is a powerful medium. We are flooded with emotion and memory when we hear meaningful songs or tunes. We depend on music to keep us focused at times and relaxed at other times. We soak up the comfort that familiar music brings to us whether we are spending time with those we love or are all alone.
As a profession, music therapy intertwines this inherent power of music with counseling skills to provide holistic care. Music therapy interventions are evidence-based and tailored to the specific needs of each individual patient, family member, and/or bereavement client.
