Why I Love Being a Hospice Medical Social Worker

After more than two decades in this field serving the beautiful communities of Western North Carolina, I can say without hesitation that being a hospice medical social worker has been one of the greatest honors of my life.

Hospice is not just a job. It is a calling rooted in compassion, dignity, and presence. Every day, I have the privilege of walking alongside individuals and families during some of their most vulnerable and sacred moments. I listen to their stories, honor their legacies, and help ensure that their final chapter is written with peace, comfort, and meaning.

Giving back to my community has always been at the heart of why I do this work. Having served in WNC for over 20 years, I have built deep connections here. I have worked with generations of families, collaborated with dedicated care teams, and witnessed firsthand how a community can wrap people in love during times of loss and transition.

What continues to inspire me, even after all these years, is how much I learn from those I serve. Every patient and family brings their own wisdom, humor, grace, and courage which reminds me daily of what really matters-connection, presence, and love.

A deeply rewarding part of my role today is leading and nurturing fellow hospice medical social workers within our agency. I am honored to mentor newer professionals – sharing knowledge, offering encouragement, and helping others grow into confident, compassionate clinicians. By investing in their development, I am ensuring our community continues to receive the highest standard of care from a team of skilled and dedicated medical social workers for years to come.

Hospice care is often misunderstood as being part of dying, but for those of us in this field, we know it is about living as fully and meaningfully as possible, right to the very end. It is about honoring the whole person – mind, body, and spirit, and supporting families through grief and healing.

I am grateful every day for the chance to serve, to listen, to comfort, and to witness the incredible resilience of the human spirit. Each day, I still feel privileged to be invited into these sacred spaces, and I continue to be humbled by the strength, grace, and love that defines hospice care.
